Turmeric Tea Recipe
I created this turmeric tea recipe after visiting a permaculture food forest in Costa Rica. David Dieterle, the creator of Té Namasté, took me on a tour of his food forest farm. He showed me how to make turmeric tea and taught me the health benefits of turmeric. Try this simple, medicinal recipe at home. My friend Garrette says it's his new favorite tea!
Turmeric Tea Ingredients:
Makes 3 pint jars or 6 cups.
- 1 can coconut milk, 13.5 oz. (increases absorption of turmeric)
- 2 cans fresh water (measure from the empty coconut can)
- 2 tbs. turmeric powder
- 1 tbs. ginger powder (increases potency of turmeric)
- 2 tbs. honey
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1 tsp. fennel
- 1 tsp. nutmeg
- 1 tsp. black pepper (increases absorption of turmeric)
Alternative spices: cardamom, star anise, cloves, caraway, stevia (Indian spices)
How To Make Turmeric Tea
Combine water and coconut milk in a small pot. Bring to medium heat. Do not boil. Turmeric is sensitive to prolonged, high heat. Keep the lid on top to save energy.
Grind fennel in a coffee grinder until powder. Add all other spices to the coffee grinder and grind together. Add these mixed spices and honey to the pot of coconut milk and water. Whisk ingredients together well. Cook on low heat for five minutes. Turn off heat and rest for 10 minutes. Continue whisking on occasion. Tea is ready to drink when cool. If you like it sweeter, add stevia to taste.
Jar the tea and store it in the refrigerator overnight. Extra time allows the ingredients to blend together, which increase flavor and nutritional value. Always shake well before drinking. The fat in coconut milk, the ginger, and the pepper increase the potency of the turmeric. Click here to learn more about the health benefits of turmeric. Turmeric stains clothing and porcelain, but will whiten teeth!
